Andropogon ternarius Splitbeard Bluestem

Andropogon ternarius

Splitbeard Bluestem

♦ Zones:  6 - 9     Height:  24 - 36"     Exposure:  Full Sun ♦

Native grass found in fields across the Eastern half of the US. Similar to Little Bluestem, but grows up to 3' with a 2' spread. Summer foliage of narrow, glaucous, blue-green leaves, turning copper, red and bronze in the fall. From late summer through fall, fluffy silver seedheads catch the sun and can often persist into winter, making this a great winter-interest plant. Tufted stems are nice in flower arrangements. A great choice for a small-scale meadow or prairie. Prefers hot dry sites with poor soil.
