Ophiopogon planiscapus Black Mondo

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'

Black Mondo

♦ Zones: 5 - 10     Height: 5 - 6"     Exposure: Partial Shade to Full Shade ♦

The unique black, grass-like leaves are a color rarity among plants.  This plant reminds us of Liriope with its grassy foliage.  It has rather insignificant pale pink – white  flowers in early fall followed by black berries.  While slow growing, it is most frequently used as edging or as a ground cover that forms dense grass-like turf.  Try it with Hostas, light colored Heuchera or Japanese Painted Ferns for a dynamic effect.
